Not so much a blog as a progress of record. The Glorious Decade is my version of those 'things to do before...' lists that we all make. The aim is to complete this list before the 31st of December 2019.

Plenty of time...

I have split the list into ten sections:

1. Travel and Holidays
2. Nature and the Countryside
3. Adventures/ Big Days Out
4. Food and Drink
5. Life
6. Things to Make and Do
7. Literature
8. Arts and Culture
9. Britain
10. The Really Quite Difficult

If you have any suggestions or want to debate or celebrate any of my choices. If you have done some of them and want to offer help or advice. Drop me a comment or two in the comment boxes.

Here are the 100 targets for The Glorious Decade.

70. Ten Nineteenth Century Writers

Like the list of Twentieth Century texts, these Nineteenth Century Writers are ones that I either have under-read or not got round to. The next decade should see me reading

  1. Austen: The complete works
  2. Dostoevsky: Crime and Punishment, The Idiot
  3. Dumas: The Count of Monte Cristo
  4. Eliot: Middlemarch, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Mariner
  5. Flaubert: Madame Bovary, A Sentimental Education
  6. Gogol: Dead Souls, Diary of a Madman
  7. Hardy: The Return of the Native
  8. Melville: Moby Dick
  9. Thackeray: Vanity Fair
  10. Tolstoy: Anna Karenina, War and Peace

  1. Read the Gogol first. It's funny, not in a chin-strokingly amusing literary kind of way, but in a hearty laugh-out-loud kind of way. That is the better of the two ways.
