Like the list of Twentieth Century texts, these Nineteenth Century Writers are ones that I either have under-read or not got round to. The next decade should see me reading
- Austen: The complete works
- Dostoevsky: Crime and Punishment, The Idiot
- Dumas: The Count of Monte Cristo
- Eliot: Middlemarch, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Mariner
- Flaubert: Madame Bovary, A Sentimental Education
- Gogol: Dead Souls, Diary of a Madman
- Hardy: The Return of the Native
- Melville: Moby Dick
- Thackeray: Vanity Fair
- Tolstoy: Anna Karenina, War and Peace
Read the Gogol first. It's funny, not in a chin-strokingly amusing literary kind of way, but in a hearty laugh-out-loud kind of way. That is the better of the two ways.
ReplyDeleteIt most certainly is.
